comparing fx3 vs zve1 and a7cii vs a7iv

image quality

  • each has their own specialty but you can’t go wrong with either
  • fx3 has dual native iso at 650 and 12800
    • which means really good low light capabilities
    • 10 bit colour and 4k 120 for super slomo if needed
  • zve1 is almost the closest to fx3 since it has pretty much the same sensor
    • 4k 120 4k 60 no crop
  • a7iv and a7cii have almost the exact same sensor as each other
    • both have 4k that is down sampled from 7k footage
    • so technically if you’re shooting 4k 120p, its actually sharper image compared to fx3 and zve1
    • however when shooting at 4k60, you’ll get a slight crop (they’re both apsc cameras, not full frame)
      • annoying because it changes your composition, and if you have wide lens and wanna shoot slow-mo on them, you always have to keep in mind about how much the crop is
      • can’t shoot in 4k120
      • just saw that apparently a7cii is a full frame camera and not apsc?
      • doesn’t have dual native iso - at 6400 it becomes quite noisy

auto-focus

  • fx3 and a7iv
    • doesn’t lose out as much
  • zve1 and a7cii
    • slightly better autofocus since they are newer to the market and i assume have whatever tech or specs for it?
    • if you want the best of the best

low light

  • fx3 and zve1
    • dual native isos
      • so even if its pitch dark, it will appear like there’s a light source
      • hands down much better than the other two

ergonomics and design

  • fx3

    • square body shape, feels abit more cinematic while being a small camera body with many built in features
      • especially mounting options which allow you to rig your body even more
    • there’s a record button at the front where you can easily click to record (plus points for a solo film maker/creator in the case you’re shooting a talking head or have the camera facing away from you, can just toggle record from the front.)
    • grip is very nice to hold, feels chunky in a good way compared to the other 3 cameras
    • dual sd card slots
      • huge for professional use and allows for redundancy, probably not the most useful for myself now but never a bad thing
    • full size hdmi port
      • he mentioned that micro and mini hdmi ports always have issues?
    • built in internal fans
      • long day shoots, or long filming sessions is definitely okay
      • no recording time limit and doesn’t over heat
      • hands down the best compared to the other 3
  • zve1

    • feels the most plasticky
    • one sd card slot
    • a micro hdmi
    • no electronic view finder
    • grip is the worst, possibly due to the material and its size
      • however it is also the smallest camera out of the bunch
      • so its nice for vlogging, really inconspicuous.
  • a7iv

    • dual sd card slots for redundancy
    • full size hdmi ports
    • evf present - its a hybrid camera
    • bigger camera similar to the fx3
      • even bigger than fx3 with the inclusion of evf
  • a7cii

    • downsides similar to zve1
      • 1 sd card slot
      • 1 micro hdmi port
      • however do have a evf but not as good as a7iv
      • built quality is solid and much better than zve1
        • feels much more substantial
        • however almost same size and weight as zve1

on paper, not much difference but in practice, these two feel much bigger than the smaller counter parts (a7cii and zve1) - travel vs professional use may be a factor to consider

do you actually need dual sd card slots?

  • rarely uses it and even for personal use, its probably not a real requirement
  • but if you’re using for professional use, its almost a must have

sony fx3 vs zv-e1 vs a7c ii vs a7 iv which looks the best?

  • white zve1 really looks the best (panda look) with a black lens
  • fx3 also looks and feels cinematic?
  • a7cii also looks like a retro fuji cam
  • a7iv looks pretty basic and business

sony fx3 vs zv-e1 vs a7c ii vs a7 iv overheating and battery does the sony zv-e1 overheat for me?

  • order is fx3 > a7iv > a7cii > zve1
  • fx3 with the internal fans have nothing to worry
  • across all four cameras they use the same battery pack
  • a7iv bigger camera body so probably can disapate heat better
  • zve1 is the worst but there’s varied reviews about this
    • some say talking heads are fine (have to take into consideration their country and climate)
    • even short burst of vlogging outdoors
    • however i’ve also seen videos of people putting it to the test in a colder climate (22-23 degrees room temperature) and shooting a 30minute max video with charging plugged in and an hour without charging
      • will probably still fit my workflow but honestly, having to think about this on the back of my mind, might not be something i’m wiling to stand for and have to consider

sony fx3 vs zv-e1 vs a7c ii vs a7 iv pricing and value

  • pricing
    • fx3 is 3898 usd ~ 5066 sgd
    • zve1 2109 usd ~ 2857 sgd
    • a7cii 2198 usd ~28577
    • a7iv 2498 usd ~ 3247 sgd
      • however when i’m looking at pricing from singapore retailers, seems like fx3 is 5.8 close to 6k on usual days and only on sale do they go for around 5-5.2k

is the zv-e1 and a7c il the better value buy?

  • unless you need the internal fan of fx3 or bigger body and dual sd card slot of a7iv, almost makes more sense to get the smaller counter parts

should you buy the sony fx3

  • solo film maker, documentary, interviews etc
  • potential to rig it out and use for the rest of the day

should you buy the sony zv-e1

  • more for content creators, vloggers
  • nothing too obnousxious

should you buy the sony at iv

  • more for photo focus and a little bit of video

should you buy the sony a7c il

  • best hybrid and small option
